We have helped many like you to play a more strategic role in their organisations, to unleash potential and to transform performance… and, ultimately, to  change the perceptions of HR and its value.

Many HR professionals argue that professional HR knowledge, skills, and experience earn the right to be heard. We've invested over 30 years studying HR, and learned that those things might get you heard.  But, they don’t guarantee that your ideas will be adopted!

So, we develop good HR professionals into great HR professionals
And, we help HR to develop good managers and leaders into great managers and leaders.

We are often referred to as HR ANARCHISTS! Why? Because we challenge the status quo, we tell the truth,  and we believe that:

  • HR expertise on its own is not enough to achieve sustained strategic impact!
  • HR will rarely have the authority to insist that anything is done … unless, of course, there is a legal requirement.
  • Those who make the final people decisions rarely have extensive HR expertise, and
  • With a few additional skills, HR can make a massive strategic impact … but, they have to fight for each opportunity to do so!

A Message from our Founder

I passionately believe in HR and its ability to make a positive and measurable impact, not only on the bottom line, but on the life of each individual employee.

I also believe:

  • most people want to do a good day's work, but
  • the world and the way we work is changing, and
  • great performance cannot be cloned, so
  • HR needs to be agile, innovative and empowered to drive sustainable performance

I created Clinton HR to reflect these values and by partnering with HR professionals, we help them to play a more strategic role in their organisations, to unleash their potential, transform their performance, and change perceptions of HR and its impact.

  • We partner with them to ensure that they have and/or develop those few additional skills that differentiate excellent HR professionals from very good HR professionals.
  • We focus on what matters, the strategically important issues.
  • We are not an off-the-shelf provider. We partner with each client to explore their challenges, aspirations and preferences. Together, we uncover the true needs and create a solution that excites us all.
  • Easy and simple are not synonyms. We don't trivialise the complex issues. However, we do ensure that the solutions we create together are practical and sustainable.  We believe in making things easy to implement and sustain. 
  • HR can never be effective with weak management and leadership in the organisation.  So, we partner with HR, managers, and leaders to ensure that excellence in management and leadership is developed.   
  • We believe that respect, trust, and humility are critical in business.  We are incredibly proud of what we do with our clients, but we are not too proud to admit when someone else could meet a need better.  So, we always point our clients in the right direction - which is sometimes not in our direction.  Because of that, they come back to us.
  • We understand the reality of security and competition, and so protect each client and each individual with the utmost confidentiality.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HR CAN MAKE A BIGGER IMPACT?

Many people look for the simple solutions (to gain quick buy-in) or complex solutions (to emphasise the importance of an issue or themselves).

However, truly effective solutions are easy solutions that do not over-simplify or trivialise the problem but that address root causes and produce sustainable results.

We believe passionately in HR and its ability to deliver such solutions.  However, that takes more than pure HR technical competence (that is a minimum standard).

HOW CAN HR MAKE A GREATER STRATEGIC IMPACT?

As an HR Professional, you must have a level of HR technical expertise that earns you the right to be heard. All great HR leaders meet that standard.

However, that is the bare minimum requirement!  Our research and work with HR professionals has shown that those who make the biggest difference, the truly great HR professionals:

  • Understand the role of HR differently to most. Irrespective of their business sector, they see HR as responsible for achieving specific, measurable outcomes.
  •  Demonstrate what might be called “courage” when they need to challenge how leadership or management operate – they bring a mix of belief in HR, determination, agility, resilience and persistence.  They fight for what they know to be right.
  • Demonstrate acute business acumen, only proposing ideas that they believe they can prove add value. They speak the colloquial "mother tongue" of line management and leadership.
  • Passionately believe, and prove, that the spending in HR that they propose is an investment, not a cost; they use evidence-based argument.
  • Understand that technology is not the answer, but can be an enabler.  They know the questions to ask, they resist populism and fads, and they choose only effective tools.
  • Are highly analytically competent. They understand how to ensure that quality data are accumulated, and how to derive, present and use intelligence from those data.
  • Continuously enhance their personal effectiveness. They utilise a rich set of influencing skills to achieve desired outcomes. They do not rely on consensus (which often leads to mediocrity), or accept "no" for an answer (which delays benefit realisation).
  • Surround themselves with talented people and help them to grow.
  • Act unremittingly to ensure excellent management and leadership throughout their organisations.
